With water storage tanks, overtime tanks naturally gather contaminants that affect the water quality. These contaminants can cause E.coil and legionella.

The Health and Safety Commission's Approved Code of Practice and guidance document 'Legionnaires' disease: the control of Legionella bacteria in water systems' (commonly known as L8), which requires that there must be a written scheme in place in respect of controlling Legionella in water systems.
